So What?
Here is the Old Testament on "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_eye_for_an_eye I can find dozens of contemporary Christian and Jewish theologians espousing reactionary dicta attacking all the other hard-won modern human decencies held up for defence in this article, repleat with scriptural support and no taint of Islam. Such Christian and Jewish patriarchal "authorities" share the infuriating attitude of doctrinal certainty that makes like-minded Islamic "authorities" so repulsive. But what really is so bad about radical Islamist teaching is not the content (idiotic or otherwise) of belief and but the insistence that fanatical certainty and violent enforcement is of the essence. It took a long long time for the Irish to beat that kind of insistence out of themselves, and it hasn't yet been beaten out of the Israelis or Palestinians. However, Buruma is perfectly right that there is no one "Islam" in the world to be mad at.
