In questions of reason and freedom, societies, like individuals, have to make a choice, says Swedish author Lars Gustafsson

A clash and a choice
Quote:
There is no way to talk away this incompatibility [sharia and many wesstern values, like an ongoing trend of tolerance to freedom of spech, thought and behavior] by vague reference to multiculturalism.
A choice must be done: either negociating with sharia mongers or keeping on embodying freedom in our european way of life and values.

Tolerance of intolerance yields intolerance. - Intolerance of intolerance yields tolerance.

Tolerance
It is interesting that when it was proposed that shia family law be introduced for Muslims in Ontario, the main opposition came from other Muslims. The equation of Islam with intolerance is not valid. Many Muslims want the individual liberties of western civilization, and chose to migrate for that reason. All Europeans have to do is point to some charter or bill of rights. Citizen to immigrants can be based on the acceptance of that. My reading of the trouble that is taking place in Europe is that racist citizenship laws and economic discrimination have led to a reaction. Another commenter insists that immigrants learn the language. Why? Most will for economic reasons. Why use compulsion. A solution requires a careful look in the mirror. It lies not in debates about abstractions like "multiculturalism" and tolerance. It lies in actions. If immigrants feel welcome they will integrate.

not as simpleminded as they seem...
Ian Buruma and (even more so) Timothy Garton Ash certainly seem simple-minded on first reading, but lets give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they do have a theoretical point: no strictly rational interpretation extends deep to bedrock...apparently, there IS NO bedrock. But this interesting finding, while endlessly fascinating to post-modern professors, cannot be taken seriously to equate shariah and modern democracy. We live in the real world, bedrock or not. Some systems work better than others. post-enlightenment democracy seems nicer than the alternatives....but given that it produces university professors who cannot differentiate between saudi arabia and the UK, one has to admit that it does have weaknesses and perhaps fatal ones....

Tolerance
Columns upon columns could be written on this subject. However, in order for countries to protect their citizens they should all adopt a common approach.

We are ______________ a country in Europe. You have choosen to freely come to our land to live and work as we did not ask you to come, therefore, we fully expect that you and your children will learn our language, adjust to our laws, customs and traditions as your new home. A Temporary Passport will be issued that is good for three years. At this time if you have not made this adjustment, or wish to adopt and uphold our laws, customs and traditions, it is time for you to return to your home country.

Regilious beliefs have no bearing on your application as that is considered a personal freedom granted to every citizen.

Be aware that the law is applied equally to all citizens and these laws are above regilious beliefs to ensure equal treatment for all citizens.
