Millions of lives
Quote:
The communist social experiment cost millions of lives, as did National Socialism and fascism. Learning from this history can only mean remaining vigilant in face of new totalitarian dangers which threaten our painstakingly acquired freedom.
The capitalist social experiment has also cost millions of lives.

I wonder if the word muslim was replaced with jew, whether this article would read anything like what was written in Germany in the 1930s.

The vast majority of muslims want only to live in peace and prosperity. Give them the chance.

Capitalism has never been a "social experiment" imposed by a state by force with genocide and mass imprisonment as its tools. Criticism of western cultural and economic imperialism, where valid, does not compare to communism.

Similarly, the Nazi analogy is invalid. If there is any common thread it is simply the fact that any relatively homogenous society is threatened and convulsed by substantial numbers of inhabitants that effectively resist assimilation to the written and unwritten laws and habits that define the relative homogeneity, unity, and identity of the dominant and established culture. Noting the fact of the problem and seeking solutions to it does not by any means imply all analyses and responses are categorically similar. I.e., noting a "muslim" or "immigrant" problem does not in itself indicate a person has the views of a Hitler.

In Praise of Dissent.
Tks for explaining Ayaan Hirsi' , Taslima Nasreen' s and others brave strong line against the new totalitarism.

Appalling the fact that so many European thinkers haven't yet identified the danger. It reminds me ''The Rhinoceros'' , the famous play (1959) by Eugène Ionesco.

''Ionesco montre à travers cette caractéristique que tout esprit de système aboutit à l'acceptation de l'inacceptable (Dans la pièce, la transformation en rhinocéros)'' (quoted from Wikipedia)

Ulrike Ackermann seems to agree with Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

However, if this would be true, then a member of a democratic parliament is betraying its religion or the liberal society.

Guess what Ulrike will conclude?

Capitalism and tolerance
It would probably take us too far afield to list the instances of state enforced acceptance of capitalism and yes, even genocide in its support. It would take us away from the main point that I want to make. It is simply wrong to demonize a whole people on the actions of a few of their number as this article does. I don't want to live under shia law, but I also don't want the Pope making rules for me. This does not lead me to believe that all catholics are evil, nor should it. Nor should I hate all Germans because a few skinheads have murdered Turkish immigrants.
Europe should look into the mirror and see how it is not living up to enlightenment ideals.
