Planned mosque in Cologne
Quote:
There is a problem with Necla Kelek's position when she says "Mosques themselves, according to Muslim interpretation, are not religious buildings like churches or synagogues, but rather 'multi-functional buildings." Most synagoagues and churches ARE multi-functional. They serve as Community Centres, indoor markets (Charity bazaars),a place where community meetings are held, festival halls for concerts and shows which are not necessarily religious, religious instruction (Sunday) schools, etc.
Giordano's point is more straightforward, because he is basing his opposition not on the function of the mosque but on what kind of message will be preached there. While his concerns are fully understood, they do not constitute a principle which can be easily accomodated in democratic system. Legally and ethically, he has no case to demand that Muslims be deprived of what is allowed to other religions. Ironically, though, his concerns are validated by the kind of response his comments elicited: death threats. If a community wishes to enjoy the rights and previliges given to religious worship in a democracy, it must be able to extirpate these kind of violent reactions from elements which reside within its boundaries.
