I, for one am very pleased to see Germany recognising the history of those refugees forced to leave their homes and possessions because of war.

My husband was six years old when his courageous mother gathered him and her other 3 children (all under 5 years of age) and managed to catch one of the last trains from the former East Prussia, just ahead of the advancing Russian army. He remembers it was just a cargo type train, packed with women and children and wounded soldiers all hoping to reach precarious safety further west. He also remembers seeing and hearing the artillary firing in the distance.

Their lives must have been terrible for the next few years, but I have always been impressed by the courage and resilience shown by my wonderful mother-in-law. Her husband was away fighting, and the fate of her little family was in her hands. I feel that I would not have managed as well in the same circumstances.

The courage of those women and children mainly, who endured terrible hardships suffered on them because of the war, should be recognised and in my opinion is long, long overdue.
